Site Controls

You use the Site Controls panel to set both your default options and your options on a site-by-site basis. For more information on setting site controls, refer to Setting Site Controls.

Trust Preferences

Site List

You use the Site List tab to define your default site control settings and to define your individual web site settings. This includes what web features you want to enable or disable and which rendering engine you want to use.

To use this panel, you select one setting from either list on the left side of the panel( Master Settings or My Settings), and then you mark all the options that you want to pertain to that setting on the right side of the panel (Web Features and Rendering Engine).

Master Settings

The Master Settings list displays the different trust settings which you can use from the Site Controls panel to quickly set security settings for a site (as described in Setting Site Controls). For example, when you select the trust setting "I Trust This Site" from the Site Controls window, Netscape applies the settings that you have defined in the Site Controls options window for that trust setting.

A trust setting is, in essence, a set of browser preferences that you can define as a group, and then apply to individual web sites through the Site Controls window. For example, on this options window, you can select the setting "I Trust This Site" and specify that, for these sites, you want to display the site using the Internet Explorer rendering engine, allow ActiveX, Java, and JavaScript, but not allow cookies and popup windows. You can define options for each trust setting level, as you see fit. You can also define settings for local documents that you open through Netscape Browser.

To make updates to a trust setting level, select it in the Master Settings list to display the current settings for that level on the right side of the panel.

Note: Master settings are over-ridden by any settings that you have saved for an individual site. Sites for which you have defined site-specific settings are listed in the My Settings list.

My Settings

The My Settings list displays the web sites for which you have established site-specific controls (as described in Setting Site Controls). Select a web site from the list to display the settings for it on the right part of the panel.

Tip: If there are a large number of sites listed, use the Filter field to narrow down the list. For example, if you enter "nets" in this field, the list will only include web-sites that include that string of letters, for example "netscape.ca".

Web Features

This area of the Site List panel displays the settings for either the master site control setting that you have selected in the Master Settings list or the web site you have selected in the My Settings list.

Allow Pop-up Windows

Check this option to allow pop-up windows for the selected trust setting or web site.

Open Pop-ups in New Tabs

Check this option to open pop-ups in their own pop-up tab. This tab displays pop-ups only . Each time you open a new pop-up, it over-writes the current pop-up display. Refer to Displaying pop-ups in tabs for details.

Allow Images to be Displayed Select this checkbox to allow images to be displayed.
From the originate site only
Only allow images that originate from the web site you are currently viewing. For example, many advertising images originate from a different domain name than the site you are viewing. Selecting this option blocks these types of images without blocking all images from the current site.
Enable cookies Allow the site to save cookies (and request access to cookies that it has saved on your previous visits to the site). For more details on cookies, refer to Managing Cookies.
From originating site only
Select this option to disallow third-party cookies, that is, cookies that do not originate from the same domain as the current site you are viewing. For example, advertisers on a site will often set their own cookies: selecting this option blocks these types of cookies.
Enable JavaScript

Allow the web site to run JavaScript (and, for the IE rendering engine, Visual Basic Script).

If JavaScript is allowed for the Firefox rendering engine, you can click the Advanced button to open a window in which you can select specific behaviours for the site:

  • Move or resize existing windows: Allows open windows to be resized or moved.
  • Raise or lower windows: Allows windows to be placed under or on top of other windows.
  • Disable or replace context menus: Allows context menus to be disabled or changed.
  • Hide the status bar: Allows the status bar to be hidden.
  • Change status bar text: Allows status bar text to be changed, such as in scrolling text in the status bar.
  • Change images: Allows images to be changed or animated, such as in image rollovers (images that change when the mouse cursor is placed over them).

Enable Java

Allow the web site to use Java.
Enable ActiveX Allow this site to download and run ActiveX controls. ActiveX controls are used by sites configured for Internet Explorer: this option is only available if you have set the Rendering Engine option to "Internet Explorer."

Rendering Engine

Use the Rendering Engine area to specify the display engine you want to use for this web site:

For more information, refer to Switching the Rendering Engine.

Trust Preferences

You use this panel to set options for how Netscape Browser uses trust ratings (or to disable it entirely). From this panel, you can change:

Netscape Trust Rating System

Use this section of the panel to define whether or not to use Netscape's trust ratings.

Use Netscape Trust Ratings for Site Controls Select this option to use Netscape's trust ratings. When you enable trust ratings, Netscape Browser uses these ratings to automatically apply your site control trust settings. For example, for sites where the trust rating is set to , Netscape Browser will by default apply the "I Trust This Site" settings .
Automatically configure my Trust Setting according to Trust Ratings

Select this option to make your site control trust settings equivalent to the Netscape trust ratings. That is:

= "I Trust This Site"
= "I'm Not Sure"
= "I Don't Trust This Site"

Always use this setting as default

Use this field when you want to use the trust ratings, but do not want Netscape Browser to use its rating system to automatically set your site control trust settings for sites. In this case, use this field to specify the default trust setting that you want to set for unknown sites.

For example, you would use this field to specify that, regardless of Netscape's trust rating (that is, the colour set in the site control icon), Netscape Browser should always use the "Not Trusted" settings when you visit an unknown site.

Display Trust Warnings in the Message Bar Display warnings for a site in the message bar. For sites that are rated as untrustworthy, use this option to display the message bar, which will explain why the site should not be trusted.
Update Netscape Trust Rating Lists every

Select the appropriate option from the drop-down list for how often Netscape Browser should update its trust ratings.

Do Not Use Netscape Trust Ratings Check this options if you do not want to use the pre-defined Netscape ratings.
Always use this as a default
If you choose not to use Netscape's trust ratings to automatically apply your site control trust settings, use this field to specify the default trust level you want to apply when visiting an unknown site.

Global Site Options

Use the global options to define the following popup options:

Show number of blocked pop-ups

Display the number of blocked pop-ups next to the pop-up icon on the navigation toolbar.

Play sound when pop-up is blocked Select this option to play a sound every time Netscape blocks a pop-up.
Display Current Rendering Engine icon in the Status Bar Select this option to easily identify the rendering engine you are using for a web site (either Firefox or Internet Explorer). When you check this option, you can easily switch engines by clicking on the icon in the status bar.
