Privacy

You use the Privacy options panel to define how Netscape Browser handles the information that it gathers while you are browsing the web. For example, in the History category on this panel, you can define how long Netscape Browser will track the sites that you have visited. This section describes all of the fields and buttons on the Privacy panel—refer to Protecting Your Privacy on the Internet for general information on internet privacy issues, and for descriptions of how to use Netscape Browser's privacy options.

History

You use the history categories (Page History and Search History) to define the number of days that you want Netscape Browser to remember what pages you have visited. You also use this category to clear your page and search history.

Page History:

Remember visited pages for the last

Enter the number of days that you want Netscape Browser to keep track of your browsing history. (The default is 9 days.)

Note: You can view your history on the History tab in My Sidebar.

Clear Page History on browser exit

Check this option to automatically delete your page history when you exit the browser.

Note: This option is grayed out if you have Clear My Tracks on Exit checked.

Clear Click this button to clear your browsing history.

Search History:

Clear Search History on browser exit

Check this option to automatically delete your search history when you exit the browser.

Note: This option is grayed out if you are have Clear My Tracks on Exit checked.

Clear Click this button to clear history information relating to searches you have entered in web search engines.


Datacard Manager

Information that you entered on web page forms is saved in the Datacard Manager.

You use the Datacard Manager option on the Privacy panel to delete all your saved datacard information.

Refer to Saving and Auto-Filling Form Information.

Clear

Click this button to clear all stored information.

Note: If you do not have any stored datacard information, this button is grayed-out.

 


Passcard Manager

Netscape Browser can securely store the passwords that you enter in web forms to make it easier to log on to the site again. You set this option using the Passcard Manager category of the Privacy panel.

Clear

Click this button to clear all stored passcards.

Note: This button is grayed-out if there is no information currently stored.

View Passcards... Click this button to view your passcards and the file or site that it accesses. When you click this button the Passcard Manager tab displays.
Set Master Passcards...

Click this button to change your master password. Your master password is used to protect sensitive information, such as your site passwords. When you click this button the Change Master Password window displays. For more information on changing your master password, refer to Saving, Updating, or Resetting a Master Password.


Download Manager History

You use Download Manager History options to define whether Netscape Browser automatically clears file information from Download Manager, or whether you prefer to remove this information manually.

Remove files from the Download Manager

Use this drop-down list to specify whether you want to manually remove file history from Download Manager, or to have Netscape Browser delete file information for you automatically. The default is manual, but you can change this option by clicking . The following list of options displays:

  • Upon successful download: Remove file information from Download Manager automatically after a download is complete.
  • When Netscape Browser exits: Clear download history automatically when you close Netscape Browser.
  • Manually: Remove file information from Download Manager only when you explicitly request it be removed.
Clear Download Manager History on browser exit

Check this option to automatically delete your download manager history when you exit the browser.

Note: This option is grayed out if you have Clear My Tracks on Exit checked.

Clear

Click this button to clear all download history information (this removes all files listed in Download Manager).

 


Cookies

You use the Cookies category on the Privacy panel to set your overall defaults for handling cookies. To set options for individual sites, refer to Setting Site Controls. For more details on cookies, refer to Managing Cookies.

 
Keep Cookies:

Use the drop-down list to select when you want to keep cookies. The following options are listed:

  • until they expire: This is the default. Netscape will keep the cookies until they expire.
  • until I close Netscape: Netscape will automatically delete the cookies when you close your browser.
  • ask me every time: Select this option to have Netscape notify you that a web site is asking to set a cookie. When you see such a warning, you can click Yes to allow or No to deny the cookie. You can also select the option for your browser to "Remember this decision." If you select "Remember this decision," you will not be warned the next time that site tries to set or modify a cookie, and your "yes" or "no" response will still be in effect.
Clear Click this button to delete all your stored cookies.
View Cookies

Click this button to open the Stored Cookies window, which lists all cookies on your computer. From this window you can view cookie details as well as remove cookies.

 


Cache

The cache stores copies of web pages that you have visited so that they can be quickly re-loaded when you return to them. You use the Cache category on the Privacy panel to specify the amount of disk space in your cache folder. Refer to Changing Cache Settings for more information on how to use this setting.

Use up to:

Enter the amount of disk space you want for your cache. The default is 50000 KB.

Clear Cache on browser exit

Check this option to automatically delete your cache when you exit the browser.

Note: This option is grayed out if you have Clear My Tracks on Exit checked.

Clear

Click this button to clear the contents of your cache.
