This panel controls how Netscape Browser handles downloading different file types such as applications, compressed files, and multimedia files. For more information on using Download Manager refer to Downloading Files.
| In this section: |
You use the Download Folder category on the Downloads panel to specify where you want Netscape Browser to save your files.

| Ask me where to save every file | Select this option to have Netscape Browser prompt you for a folder location prior to downloading a file. |
| Save all files to this folder | Use this field to set a default folder that Netscape Browser will always use to store downloaded files. By default, Netscape Browser saves downloads to the Windows Desktop. To change this, click on the button to display a list of alternate folder locations:
Note: In addition to these options, Netscape Browser will also list in the drop-down any other folders to which you have recently saved downloads. |
| Show Folder | Click this button to display your default folder in the File Manager window. |
You use the Download Manager category on the Downloads panel to determine the behaviour of the Download Manager window when you are downloading files, that is whether or not you want it to display.

| Show Download Manager window when a download begins | When you start to download a file, Download Manager displays so that you can view the progress of the download, as well as file information such as the size of the download file. If you do not want Download Manager to display this information, uncheck this option. |
| Close the Download Manager when all downloads are complete | Download manager will automatically close when the download is complete. To keep it open, uncheck this option. |
You use the File Types category on the Downloads panel to view a list of file types that you have downloaded. You can then select a file type and choose what product you want to associate with it. For example, you can specify all downloaded text files be opened using Notepad. You also use this category to control the plug-ins that Netscape Browser runs.
Refer to Managing Different File Types for more information on selecting file types.

| File type list | This list displays file associations that you have already defined in windows, as well as those that you have added in when downloading in Netscape Browser. When a file type has been associated with a helper application, the product icon for that application displays on the left and "open with [product name]" displays on the right. For example, on the above screen capture, there is a PDF icon, next to the file type Adobe Acrobat Document, and to the right is "open with Acrobat Exchange". If there is no icon, and no product name listed, it means that you have not selected a product to open the file type (and there is no automatic association for the file type). When you open this type of file from a site, Netscape Browser will prompt you for the helper application that you want to use. |
| Change Action | Select a different helper application for the highlighted file type. |
| Remove | Remove the selected file associations rule from the list. |
| Plug-Ins | Click this button to display the Plug-Ins window, which you use to specify plug-in applications to use with Netscape Browser. Plug-Ins are similar to helper applications, except that they enable you to open files directly in Netscape Browser without having to open a separate application. |
